Understanding Ideal Body Weight
Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimated weight range considered healthy for a person based on their height and gender. Multiple formulas have been developed over the years by different researchers.
Formulas Used
- Devine (1974): Most commonly used in clinical settings, especially for drug dosing
- Robinson (1983): Modified Devine formula based on metropolitan life tables
- Miller (1983): Further modification to better match actual weights
- Hamwi (1964): One of the earliest formulas, still widely referenced
