Frequently Asked Questions
What is UTC and how does it relate to other time zones?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks. All other time zones are expressed as offsets from UTC, such as EST being UTC-5 or JST being UTC+9. UTC does not observe daylight saving time, making it a stable reference point for global time coordination.
How does Daylight Saving Time (DST) affect time zone conversions?
DST can shift a time zone's offset by one hour during certain months. For example, EST (UTC-5) becomes EDT (UTC-4) during DST. Not all regions observe DST, so time differences between locations may change throughout the year. Our converter automatically accounts for DST based on the selected date.
What is the difference between EST, EDT, ET, and Eastern Time?
EST (Eastern Standard Time) is UTC-5, used during winter months (November to March). EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) is UTC-4, used during summer months (March to November). ET (Eastern Time) is a general term that refers to whichever is currently in effect. Eastern Time encompasses both EST and EDT.
How do I schedule a meeting across multiple time zones?
Use our Meeting Planner tab to select a time and see it displayed across multiple time zones simultaneously. Add participant zones using the "Add Participant Zone" button. The tool shows business hours overlap to help you find times that work for all participants during normal working hours (9 AM - 5 PM local time).
Time Zone Tips
IANA Time Zones
We use IANA time zone database identifiers (like America/New_York) which automatically handle DST transitions accurately.
Date Line Crossings
When converting across the International Date Line, the date may change. Look for the "Next Day" or "Previous Day" indicator.
Half-Hour Zones
Some regions use non-standard offsets like UTC+5:30 (India) or UTC+9:30 (Central Australia). All are supported here.
